Support β€” Waterfall Advanced

🎬 Video walkthrough β€” watch it on YouTube. Building a P&L bridge from scratch: bar types, checkpoints, the target line, the data table and IBCS mode.

Quick start

  1. Add the visual to your report from Microsoft AppSource.
  2. Drag the P&L line or driver name into Category.
  3. Drag the amount into Value. Positive is an increase, negative a decrease.
  4. Optionally add Bar type β€” a column holding total, subtotal or delta β€” so the chart knows which bars are anchors and which are drivers. Aggregate it as First, not Sum.
  5. Optionally add Order to fix the sequence of the bridge.

Field wells

WellRequiredWhat it does
CategoryYesBar labels. Supports hierarchies and drilldown.
ValueYesBar amounts. Positive increases, negative decreases.
Target (optional)NoDrawn as a dashed line on the anchor bars, with its own label and figure.
Bar typeNototal, subtotal or delta. Aggregate as First. Auto-detected if left empty.
OrderNoSequence of the bars. Use a numeric column set to "Do not summarize".
TooltipsNoExtra measures shown in the tooltip.
Colour (DAX, optional)NoA hex colour per row calculated in your model, e.g. "#C96442".

Bar types and auto-detection

Leave Bar type empty and the visual treats the first and last rows as totals and everything in between as drivers. That covers a simple opening-to-closing walk.

For a real P&L you want checkpoints β€” Net Revenue, Gross Profit, EBITDA β€” so connect the well and mark those rows subtotal. A subtotal is drawn from zero, like a total, so a reader sees where the margin stood before the next block of costs. A delta floats from the running total.

What happens above twelve drivers on the free tier: the smallest drivers are grouped into a single "Others" bar. The bridge still closes on exactly the same figure β€” the detail is coarser, no number is wrong and nothing is hidden. You can rename that bar in the Chart card.

Format pane

Colors

Colour-blind safe palette, hatch decreases, increase / decrease / total / target colours, legend font size and colour.

Labels

Show labels, label mode (absolute, relative %, or both), font size, value label colour, category label colour and font size. Pro adds the category label angle (horizontal, βˆ’30Β°, βˆ’45Β°, βˆ’90Β°), truncation at N characters, and hiding labels that do not fit.

Number format

Currency symbol and position, scale (auto, none, thousands, millions), decimals, thousands separator. Format strings defined in your model are respected.

Chart

Connector lines, show subtotals, target label and value, summary cards, sort by impact, invert increase/decrease colours, max drivers shown, the "Others" label, and orientation.

Summary Cards

Opening, closing, variance %, biggest gain and biggest loss. Caption and value font sizes, and theme-aware or custom text and background colours.

Data Table Pro

Position (right or bottom), running total column, % of opening column, separator line, font size, width or height share, and theme-aware or custom background.

IBCS Pro

Monochrome notation with the emphasis on deviation, for standards-based financial reporting.

In the report

Click a bar to cross-filter the page; Ctrl-click or Cmd-click to add to the selection; click the selected bar again to clear it. Cross-highlighting dims the bars that fall outside a selection made elsewhere. Bookmarks and the selection pane restore the selection. Right-click a bar for the Power BI context menu. The visual can be used as a report page tooltip.

Accessibility

Languages

The chart surface is localised into English, Spanish, French and German, following the Power BI language setting: the five summary cards, the landing page hint and the tooltip labels. The format pane and the field well names are English in every language β€” worth knowing before you look for a translated property and conclude it is missing.

Privacy

The visual makes no network calls of any kind: no telemetry, no analytics, no CDN, no external endpoints. All calculation and rendering happens inside Power BI, on your machine or in your tenant. It reads no local files and persists nothing outside the report beyond your formatting choices. Full detail in the privacy policy.

FAQ

Bars appear in the wrong order.
Connect a numeric column to the Order well and set it to "Do not summarize" in the data model.

Totals and subtotals come out as zero, or as drivers.
The Bar type column must contain exactly total, subtotal or delta, and must be aggregated as First β€” not Sum or Count. Check for trailing spaces.

I see an "Others" bar I did not ask for.
Either the free tier is grouping the drivers beyond twelve, or Max drivers shown in the Chart card is set to a number. The total is correct in both cases.

I bought Pro but the data table or IBCS mode does nothing.
Sign out of Power BI and back in to refresh the licence, then reopen the report. The licence resolves asynchronously, so the chart repaints a moment after the report loads. If it persists, email support with your tenant and the plan you bought.

Rotated category labels are cut off.
Label angle is a Pro control. If labels still collide, raise the angle, lower the category font size, or switch to horizontal orientation β€” line-item names read better down the side.

Where did the AI narratives go?
They were removed in 1.1.0.0. They called external services, which a certified Power BI visual may not do, so the sandbox blocked them in every published report β€” the feature never worked outside development. The Finance tier went with them.
