In Power BI Desktop, go to the Visualizations pane → click the three dots → Get more visuals → search for Org Chart by TCViz.
Drag the person's ID to Employee ID and their manager's ID to Manager ID. The person with an empty Manager ID is the top of the chart. That is all the visual needs: it works out the levels itself, however deep the organisation is.
Add Name, Job title, Department and Photo. Put a measure in Value (cost, FTE, sales…) to show it on each card and add it up for each manager's team.
Format → Style template: Clean, Corporate, Colorful, Minimal or Compact. Anything you set by hand wins over the template.
| Well | Accepts | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Employee ID | 1 column | A unique ID for each person or position. Required. |
| Manager ID | 1 column | The Employee ID of each person's manager. Empty, or the person's own ID, means the top of the chart. Required. |
| Dotted-line manager ID | 1 column | Optional second manager (matrix or project reporting). Drawn as a dashed curved line and shown in the tooltip. |
| Name | 1 column | Main text of the card. A row with an empty name is shown as a vacancy, with a dashed border. |
| Job title | 1 column | Second line of the card. |
| Department | 1 column | Colours the cards and can group teams in boxes. |
| Photo | 1 column | A Base64 image stored in your model (data:image/jpeg;base64,…; PNG, JPEG, GIF, SVG or WebP). Without a photo, the card shows the person's initials. Web links are not loaded, on purpose — see Privacy. |
| Value | 1 measure | Shown on each card and added up for each manager's whole team (tooltip and line labels). |
| Color value | 1 measure | Colours the cards on a gradient when Colors → Color by is Color value. |
| Tooltips | measures | Extra values in the tooltip. |
Limits: Power BI sends up to 30,000 rows per block. In the Power BI service the visual asks for the next blocks automatically; Power BI Desktop only sends the first block to custom visuals, and the warning icon in the visual header says so.
+N, the number of direct reports under it.None, Clean (default), Corporate (left band, square photos, shadow), Colorful (cards tinted by department), Minimal (no borders, curved lines) and Compact (small cards without photos). A template only fills in what you have not changed yourself.

|---|---|---|
| Card width / height | 200 / 64 | 80–600 and 28–300 pixels. |
| Show photo · Photo shape · Photo ring | On · Circle · On | Circle, Rounded or Square. The ring takes the department (or level) colour, so the palette shows on cards with photos too. |

| Team size | Direct reports | None, Direct reports, Whole team, or both. |
| Show value | On | The Value measure, formatted as in your model. |
| Font · Name size · Name color · Text color | Segoe UI · 12 | |

| Border color · width · Corner radius · Shadow | grey · 1 · 8 · Off | |
| Department band | Top | A band in the department (or level) colour: Top, Left or None. |
| Setting | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Orientation | Top to bottom | Or Left to right. |

| Space between cards · between levels | 16 · 40 | |
| Open levels to fit | On | Off: Levels open at start decides (0 opens every level). |
| Group departments | Off | Draws a box, in the department colour, around each department's team. |
| Click selects the whole team | On | Clicking a manager filters the page by everyone under them. Off: just that person. |
Shape: Elbow, Straight or Curved · Color, Width, Dashed · Department color (each line takes the colour of the team below) · Show dotted-line managers · Label on each line: the size of the team below or its total value.
| Color by | What you get |
|---|---|
| Department | Each department its own colour (band, initials, lines, groups). |
| Level | Each level of the organisation its own colour — useful without a Department field. |
| Color value | Cards on a gradient from Low color to High color by the Color value measure (or Value). |
| Single color | Card color for every card. |
Tint cards fills each card with a shade of its department or level colour; Tint strength % (default 22) sets how strong. 16 palettes, 4 of them colour-blind safe. Background: optional; empty keeps the visual transparent.
Show or hide the toolbar, search, minimap and breadcrumb. On small tiles the toolbar and search hide themselves.
In format mode, click a card's text to change font, size and colour, the card itself for fill and border, or a line for its colour and shape — without opening the Format pane.
↑ manager, ↓ first report (opens the branch if needed), ← → colleagues; left to right the arrows turn with the chart. Home goes to the top, Enter or Space selects (Ctrl to add), +/- expand and collapse, F shows only that team, Esc clears, Shift+F10 opens the context menu.| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The start page with three steps | Employee ID or Manager ID is empty. | Both fields are required. |
| Everyone at the top, side by side | Manager ID values do not match Employee ID values (text against numbers, leading zeros, spaces). | Use the same column type and format for both IDs. The warning icon lists the IDs it could not find. |
| Photos do not appear | The Photo value is a web link, is longer than Power BI's 32,766-character limit for a text value, or does not start with data:image/. | Store small images as Base64 (a 96×96 JPEG is about 5,000 characters). |
| Only two levels are open | Open levels to fit keeps names readable. | Expand branches by hand, zoom in, or turn it off and set Levels open at start. |
| A warning icon about rows in Desktop | Power BI Desktop sends custom visuals only the first 30,000 rows. | Publish to the Power BI service. |
| fx on Card color does nothing | Color by is Color value, which takes the colour from the measure. | Set Color by to Department, Level or Single color. |
Yes. Every feature on this page is included, with no licence, no limit on the number of people, no trial and no watermark.
No. Any parent–child table works: a chart of accounts, cost centres, legal entities, a product tree. Put the item's ID in Employee ID and its parent's ID in Manager ID.
There is no level limit: the levels come from the Manager ID chain, not from separate columns.
Add a row for the position with an Employee ID, a Manager ID and an empty Name. It is drawn as Vacant with a dashed border.
Yes: the main manager in Manager ID and the second one in Dotted-line manager ID. The second link is drawn as a dashed curved line, and the tooltip names it.
As Base64 text: a column whose values start with data:image/jpeg;base64,. Keep them small — Power BI cuts text values longer than 32,766 characters; a 96×96 JPEG is about 5,000. Set the column's data category to Image URL if you also want to see the photos in a table.
The visual has no network permission, so it cannot load anything from outside your report — and cannot send anything either. See Privacy.
Power BI bookmarks keep a custom visual's selection: applying one selects the same people again, opens their branches and centres them. The branches you open by hand and the team you focus on are kept while you work — through filters and refreshes — but a bookmark does not store them; that is how bookmarks work for all custom visuals.
Turn off Layout → Click selects the whole team.
The org chart is already the hierarchy: open a branch, or use Show only this team to go into it, and the breadcrumb to come back up. Power BI's drill buttons apply to hierarchies of columns, which an employee–manager table does not have.
