Identifying Sales Performance Outliers with Histogram Pro
How a retail analytics team used distribution analysis to uncover hidden revenue gaps — and took action in under a week.
The Challenge
A regional retail company had 4,200 sales representatives across 12 countries. Their standard Power BI dashboard showed average deal size, total revenue, and YoY growth — but the averages masked a serious problem: a small group of reps was generating disproportionate revenue while the majority underperformed.
The analytics team suspected the distribution was skewed, but their existing bar charts showed only totals per region, not the underlying spread of individual deal sizes.
Key question: "What does the distribution of individual deal sizes actually look like — and where is the cutoff between our top performers and the rest?"
Solution: Histogram Pro in Power BI
Add the visual. Import Histogram Pro from AppSource. Drag the Deal Size (USD) measure into the Values field well, and the Sales Rep ID dimension into Detail (rows).
Set meaningful bins. With a Pro license, increase bin count to 30 to reveal the long tail of high-value deals that was invisible at 10 bins.
Enable the statistics panel. Turn on the Stats Panel (Pro) to instantly see n, mean, median, and σ. The team immediately noticed the median ($4,200) was 40% below the mean ($7,100) — a clear sign of right skew driven by outliers.
Trim outliers to focus on the core. Apply a 5% upper trim to exclude the top performers and study the distribution of the remaining 95% — the group with the most room to improve.
Overlay a normal curve. Enable the Normal Curve (Pro) to visualize how far the actual distribution deviates from normal. The right-side gap confirmed that a training or territory assignment issue was suppressing mid-tier performance.
Cross-filter with region slicer. Click any bar to cross-filter the rest of the report. The team discovered that the problematic distribution was concentrated in two specific regions.
Results
| Metric | Before | After (3 months) |
| Mid-tier rep average deal size | $4,200 | $5,800 |
| % of reps above $5K threshold | 31% | 48% |
| Revenue concentration (top 10%) | 61% | 47% |
By identifying the distribution gap early, the team reallocated coaching resources to the two underperforming regions and adjusted territory assignments — yielding a 38% improvement in mid-tier deal size within one quarter.
